What This Map Covers

Map viewport is centred on Plymouth, England, and takes in the surrounding region. It shows lightning flashes detected from space by the EUMETSAT Meteosat Third Generation Lightning Imager, a few minutes after each flash. On the South West peninsula, Plymouth is often among the first English cities reached by storms tracking up the English Channel and in from the Atlantic.

This is satellite optical lightning detection: it records total lightning as flashes, does not separate cloud-to-ground strikes from in-cloud flashes, and places each flash approximately rather than to the metre. It is not rainfall radar, not a forecast and not a complete storm archive. Thick cloud and processing conditions can cause flashes to be missed. This is not a Met Office product and carries no official warning status.

Safety limit: absence of a marker never proves outdoor safety. Satellite detections can be delayed or missed, and storms move between refreshes.

LIGHTNING AROUND PLYMOUTH

What thunderstorms near Plymouth usually look like

Plymouth faces open water on a narrow peninsula, so its lightning is dominated by what is happening at sea. Storm complexes moving up the Channel, or in from the South West Approaches, are frequently detected over water long before they reach Plymouth Sound, and some pass by offshore without ever coming ashore. Dartmoor, just to the north-east, adds the other half of the picture: on warm days it sets off its own storms, which then drift towards the coast. For anyone sailing, paddling or working on the water, the offshore view is the useful part of this map — but remember the marks are approximate positions of flashes, not a forecast of where the storm will go next.

The map records flashes that have already happened, not a forecast. For official thunderstorm warnings in England, follow the Met Office.
