What This Map Covers

Map viewport covers England and adjacent coastal waters. It shows lightning flashes detected from space by the EUMETSAT Meteosat Third Generation Lightning Imager, a few minutes after each flash. England sees more thunderstorm activity than the rest of the United Kingdom, particularly across the South East, East Anglia and the Midlands during summer plume events.

This is satellite optical lightning detection: it records total lightning as flashes, does not separate cloud-to-ground strikes from in-cloud flashes, and places each flash approximately rather than to the metre. It is not rainfall radar, not a forecast and not a complete storm archive. Thick cloud and processing conditions can cause flashes to be missed. This is not a Met Office product and carries no official warning status.

Safety limit: absence of a marker never proves outdoor safety. Satellite detections can be delayed or missed, and storms move between refreshes.

London and South East England

The most lightning-active part of the UK. In summer, warm continental air drawn up from France and Iberia carries elevated convection across the Channel into Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Greater London, often overnight.

Midlands and Central England

Strong daytime heating over inland ground triggers scattered afternoon thunderstorms that drift slowly across Birmingham, the Black Country and Nottinghamshire, so flashes tend to cluster rather than track.

North West and Yorkshire

Convergence along the Pennines can set off sharp lines of thunderstorms over Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield before they move east towards the Humber.

South West and western coasts

Atlantic squall lines and Channel storm complexes come ashore over Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and the Bristol area, with lightning usually detected over the sea first.

Where England gets most of its lightning

Thunderstorms are not spread evenly across England. The south and east see the most, because the storms that produce the heaviest lightning here are usually imported rather than home-grown: warm, humid air rides north from France and Iberia ahead of a low to the west, and the resulting thundery outbreaks cross the Channel into Kent, Sussex, Essex and East Anglia. These plume events often arrive in the small hours, which is why an English thunderstorm can wake a whole county at three in the morning and be gone by breakfast. Inland, the Midlands rely more on daytime heating: storms build through the afternoon, move slowly and can sit over one town for an hour. Along the Pennines, air forced together on either side of the hills triggers lines of storms that track east towards Yorkshire and the Humber. In the South West and along the Welsh border, the driver is the Atlantic — squall lines and organised storm clusters come in off the sea, so Cornwall, Devon and the Bristol Channel coast often record flashes offshore before anything reaches land.

When to expect thunderstorms in England

The main season runs from late spring to the end of summer, peaking in the warmest and most humid spells. Those are the classic afternoon and overnight storms, with heavy rain, hail and sometimes surface flooding on hard ground that cannot absorb it quickly. There is a second, quieter pattern in autumn and winter: cold air moving over a relatively warm sea produces showers along the coasts and over the Irish Sea and North Sea that can turn thundery, and occasionally deliver thunder with snow or hail on the highest ground. Those winter flashes are far fewer, but they matter if you work outdoors on the coast. Thunderstorms in England can also develop and decay within a couple of hours, so what the map shows now is a poor guide to what it will show later in the day.

How to read this England lightning map

Each mark on the map is an optical flash seen from space by the Meteosat Third Generation Lightning Imager, not a rainfall echo and not a ground-strike point surveyed to the metre. The instrument records total lightning — flashes inside clouds as well as those reaching the ground — and places each one approximately, within a few kilometres. Detections reach the map a few minutes after the flash itself. In practice that makes the map good for two questions: is there active lightning near me, and which way is it moving? Watch which edge of the viewport lights up first. Flashes appearing over the Channel, the Irish Sea or the North Sea commonly arrive on the coast afterwards, and a cluster that stays in one place usually means a slow storm and prolonged rain rather than one passing through. An empty map is not an all-clear: a new storm can produce its first flash with no warning, and faint flashes under very thick cloud can be missed. For forecasts and official yellow or amber thunderstorm warnings, the Met Office is the source to follow. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck — go inside a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble before going back out.
