What This Map Covers

Map viewport is centred on Belfast, Northern Ireland, and takes in the surrounding region. It shows lightning flashes detected from space by the EUMETSAT Meteosat Third Generation Lightning Imager, a few minutes after each flash. Thunderstorms over Belfast Lough and the Lagan Valley are usually set off by Atlantic fronts or by summer heating over the interior of Northern Ireland.

This is satellite optical lightning detection: it records total lightning as flashes, does not separate cloud-to-ground strikes from in-cloud flashes, and places each flash approximately rather than to the metre. It is not rainfall radar, not a forecast and not a complete storm archive. Thick cloud and processing conditions can cause flashes to be missed. This is not a Met Office product and carries no official warning status.

Safety limit: absence of a marker never proves outdoor safety. Satellite detections can be delayed or missed, and storms move between refreshes.

Belfast records thunder on only a handful of days in a typical year, and the flashes it does see tend to come from two directions. Atlantic systems crossing from the south-west bring thundery bursts along a front, most often in the cooler months; in summer, heating over the low ground around Lough Neagh occasionally sets off isolated cells that drift down the Lagan Valley towards the city. The hills of Antrim and the Mournes in County Down frame the map on either side. Because the viewport also covers the Irish Sea and the North Channel, showers heading for the County Down coast are commonly detected over water first.
