What "Close" Means in Safety Terms
The National Weather Service safety trigger is audible thunder: when thunder roars, go indoors. Move to a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle and remain sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.
Flash-to-bang timing can estimate distance, but it is not permission to stay outside. Lightning can occur outside the heaviest rain and beyond the apparent storm core, and a map may be delayed or incomplete.
What Counts as Shelter
- Substantial building with plumbing and electrical wiring (the metal acts as a Faraday cage).
- Hard-topped vehicle with windows closed (avoid touching metal frame).

Common Questions
Why does the closest strike sometimes appear over the ocean?
GOES GLM provides broad optical coverage over oceans as well as land, while radio-network coverage and precision depend on receiver geometry. Near a coast, an offshore storm can therefore produce the nearest reported optical flash.
How fresh is the data?
Freshness varies. NOAA publication cadence, Lightning Tracker polling, processing, network delivery, and screen refresh are separate steps. Check the displayed timestamp and methodology; if thunder is audible, shelter instead of waiting for a marker.
